Four-hundred and fifty years ago, humankind discovered the secrets of traveling through hyperspace, allowing them to traverse interstellar distances in a matter of days or weeks.
Now, there are dozens of human colonies scattered among the stars. Eight of these colonies have grown to the point that they have begun influencing Earth and each other as much as Earth influences them.
Due to the vast distances between the stars (and the time it takes to travel between them), many of the colonies are governed by Earth in name only; and as many more lack even that distinction.
On top of this, there are a plethora of alien races waiting just beyond the edges of humanity's influence. Some are friends, such as the rodent-like Frewen. Others, such as the reptilian Tesaad, are locked in bitter rivalry with the children of Earth.
Although most are, not all of the races humans deal with are of a similar technical level. The Irrothlyr are enigmatic and incredibly advanced, while the barbaric Verdani only have access to whatever technologies they can steal.
Some races' influence is felt and not seen. Even the Irrothlyr speak in awe with regard to the legendary Mylonians; the Frewen speak of the Xill only to frighten bad children, and even then never without superstitiously warding themselves against evil.
And those are just the neighbors. The real trouble is in the back yard...
