At the "negligent homicide" he blushes a little and says: "Yeah…turned out Shauna wasn't as nimble as I though. Everything else worked perfectly though!"
At the conclusion of your speech he says: "Sure chief, whatever you say. It was a shame about those people, though. I tried, but my mods just weren't good enough. It'll never happen again chief, I swear.
"Can I ask you something, Chief? I've seen the Dirty Dozen so don't try to lie to me! What's goin' down that makes the military need a bunch of throw-away pilots?"

As this man mentioned Shauna, Beamer remembered how he almost lost Elyna many times, for the first time it had hit beamer in the face like a sack of bricks. He had walked a razor fine line when it came to Elyna and the code. He had never realized it before. Never in his life had he questioned himself. He just assumed that she was good enough. Was he really following the code... the first rule was self interest. The second was the interest of your mate. Now mate is loosely defined, but Elyna was the closest he had found since his friends left the academy. Was greed worth the loss of his mate? Was his rush to push the military limits worth the loss of this woman. His father always told him, "She wasn't worth it boy, but you always were."
"The promise stands that you will work every day for the next 20 years to pay for the loss of life you robbed from the families. If it was a child do not worry so much as the bread winners that you took. Write letters to every family it affected letting them know that the creds that are being sent are because you are repaying their loss. If you surpass the standard of living they were at, you are a better man than I. I just want you to pay for them to live as if they had not lost their income... and run all of your future mods and their potential problems that could harm anyone beside yourself, before you use it."
Beamer thinks about Elyna again forgetting that her double, possibly Elyna herself is in the next room. He takes a deep breath, "The military doesn't Abe, I do. The military would rather see you rot for your sins instead of give you the chance to repay your debt. So with that known, I have a large squid problem that needs to be taken care of. I want your help to prevent more problems or to kill it and it's mate. I am sure there can't only be one that large. Frankly I don't think our team will be enough if there is an attack by more than one. I already lost Bitty to the beast, it will likely take the pushers on this backwards rock two weeks to fix her. There is a good chance you will die Abe, there is a good chance we all could. Though I want the men who have nothing else to live for. They fight the hardest, and think in circles instead of the straight lines." He laughs, "The straight shooters are the throw aways. It is men like us that can protect the rest."
He looks down at tweaker and thinks about the first two parts of the code.
"Tell me about Shauna, who was she?"

The grin vanishes and he gets a little teary eyed. He nods repeatedly as you speak. He even takes his feet off the table and sits like a schoolboy that had just been scolded. He brightens considerably when you mention Shauna.
"She was the best, chief. Sure, when we first met she was a sluggish pig like all her sisters. But that's an SO-35 for ya. Build for everything and good at nothing! I tell ya, chief; assembly lines are no fit way to build a mech.
"Anyway, I started with the power output. I could outrun even those fancy new SO-70s with let wear on the engines. Heh, the techs all but worshiped me for it. Then I went to work on the actuators. I got to the point where she could pick up whiskey bottles without breaking them. I was super-charged that day, tough. Still, I should have known better than to try and pick that dude's pocket. Man! What was I thinking?"
"You know what, forget the rum, chief. Starting today, I don't drink!"
He goes glum again, "I don't know what happened to her after they sent me away." He looks skyward and lays a hand over his heart, "They probably carted her off and restored her to 'factory conditions.'"
If you're done with Abe, the MPs take him away and replace him with Sylvia Willden. She sits in the chair and waves at you shyly. "Hi," is all she says.

Beamers sits in the chair directly across from her and just looks at her with a disbelieving look. "Remarkable..." He shakes his head.

Willden goes pale, bites her nails and tries to turn invisible. Eventually, she realizes that she's failed and stammers "W-what's remarkable," in a voice so weak you can barely hear her.

"Schwarts? Why are you here?" Beamer can't believe what he sees. Could this really be Ellyna? "Elly, why did you come to this rock?" His mind is still stuck on how he had put her in danger so many times. Especially his last stunt to obtain parts for warp drive capabilities on Bitty. He almost lost her and now he was seeing a side of her that was just as vulnerable as the day he shielded her mech with Bitty from the pirate assault. A happy tear wells in his right eye.

"I can't really explain right now," she indicates the MPs and lowers her voice to a whisper, "but as you can see, I'm in kind of a tight spot. Help would be…appreciated."

This didn't seem like the woman he knew, her attitude was drastically different. "Sorry dear, you aborted our kid so that you could join my team on the skirmish to expand Skadian boarders. That hurt, now I need to know why you are here. I have time and the leverage. I want to know why you are here."
He was bluffing about the child. He wanted to know who this was. The proper response would be, 'Beamer, the child was a goat and it belonged to your uncle.' Ellyna had be on a mission where a goat had managed to get onto an airship before they took off. When they ejected it into space with a small explosive strapped to it, blood flew out and blocked the visual readers on the ship that was following them. It had given them just enough advantage to blast up the controls of the enemy ship. He knew that if this was her she would toss that inside joke back in his face.

She snorts: "Hah! You're not that cute!"

He laughs, "I knew it wasn't you. So are you a cousin, sister, clone... Did you really think I was naive enough to allow you on a team to get out of prison without knowing who you are. Lay it out. We have a couple of hours."
