Your parents are succumbing to a strange illness and to cure the disease; the village druid needs a special herb that grows only in absolute darkness.
You must enter the haunted cavern at the foot of the Howling Cliffs to find it before time runs out.
Thus you find yourself staring into the yawning abyss as the haunting song of the Howling Cliffs threatens to drive conscious thought from your mind.

Nezumi wraps her thin cloak more tightly around herself and covers her ears with her hands for a moment to block out the sound. The small whimper she makes can barely be heard over the howling of the wind through the chasm-riddled cliffs.
Finally, she bites her lip and wipes her eyes, standing up straight. She grips the sprig of mistletoe the druid gave her, and holding it aloft shouts, "Heavens light be with me!" She steps into the darkness with only the dimly glowing sprig to light her way.

The soft light of Nezumi’s mistletoe presses against the pervasive darkness around her as she winds her way into the cave. Soon she comes to branch in the cavern where a narrow pit in the cavern floor opens like a predator’s maw into a steep passageway leading further down, while the main tunnel rounds to the left and upward from thence.

Nezumi picks up a rock and uses it to scratch a mark onto the cave floor, setting a glowing mistletoe leaf next to it. She wraps a piece of cloth around each hand to grip better with, and begins to climb down into the pit.

The tight passage seems to press against Nezumi as she climbs through the rugged chasm. In time it opens to chamber large enough for her to stand and stretch.
In the center of the chamber; a crystal pool of clear, cold water sits placidly, disturbed only by the ripple of water caused by occasional drips from the damp ceiling.
Beyond it, another cleft leads away from the water.

Nezumi studies the pool and walks around it with her light, looking for the herb that she came to find. If she does not see it, she will continue.

Nezumi does not find the plant she seeks, but as she carefully circles the crystal pool. she finds a small stack of stones with a single larger slab nearly a foot across set atop it.

Nezumi frowns at the pile of stones, at first unsure what they mean, and then she realizes that they are evidence that somebody else has been here before. She shivers, warding herself against evil spirits, and creeps through the other cleft.

The cavern opens into a larger chamber lined with stone teeth and overgrown with slimey moss. In one corner, Nezumi notes a patch of pale white toadstools.

Trying not to lose her nerve over the stone teeth, she makes her way toward the toadstool patch, again looking for any sign of the herb she wants. She slips on the moss and gives out a little shriek, ending up with a scraped knee and elbow. She screws up her face and inches the rest of the way toward the cluster.
